v. 3 "He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake."
What was one of the main pre-conditions that David needed to have in order to pen this psalm, to have this confession of who God was to him? It was this: that David's purpose and goal in life was to see GOD'S will done and to see GOD'S name hallowed and honored.
Had David been still focused on satisfying his own agenda and desires, he probably would not have considered God to be such a wonderful Shepherd. When things don't pan out the way one expects, and one's purpose in life is still to live for one's own name, then life becomes frustrating and senseless. In such a life there can be no peace and no overflow of the heart. Either life is frustrating and miserable (in the bad times) or life is insecure and happiness is tenuous (in the good times), since the world does NOT revolve around me.
Application: I need to re-examine my life purpose, not just once in a while but everyday, because it is frighteningly easy to shift life purposes from living to honor Him who died for me to living for my own name and self-serving kingdom.
